A’s Kyler Murray hints at when he’ll make a decision

first_imgKyler Murray’s date to report to A’s spring training is Feb. 15, but his decision to play football or baseball could come well before then. The Heisman Trophy winner made the media rounds at the Super Bowl on Friday morning, where he was asked the same question he has been asked the last few months: which sport will he play? “It’s really coming down to these last couple of days. I’ll probably make a decision here soon after the Super Bowl. Really soon, actually,” Murray said on ESPN’s Get Up! …last_img

A brief history of National FFA Convention as it moves back to Indy

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The National FFA Organization’s 89th annual National Convention & Expo is underway this week from October 19th through the 22nd. This time, it travels back to the familiar home of Indianapolis, Indiana. The return follows a multi-year stretch in which the convention moved back to its former home of Louisville, Kentucky through 2015. Indianapolis will now be the host city through at least 2024.A growing organization is partially the reason behind the change back to our neighbors in the west. The National FFA Organization currently boasts a new record-high student membership of 649,335, a 3% notch higher than just a year before.Well over 60,000 of those students are expected to be lining the streets of Indianapolis in blue corduroy jackets. As those students gear up for a busy week ahead, we take a look back at the change the organization’s biggest event has seen down the years, as well as what lies ahead. The following is a brief look at the history of the National FFA Convention and its location.Held once a year in the fall, the National FFA Convention began in 1928 as a way for members of the then small and newly formed organization to come together for fellowship and to decide on executive matters that would influence the Future Farmers of America. Executive sessions are still an integral part of the convention with delegates from each state present to help decide on actions of the organization, though the convention has now grown to be much more than a voting apparatus. The first convention was held in Kansas City, Missouri with 33 delegates from 18 states in attendance. Leslie Applegate of New Jersey was selected as the first national FFA president. The organization grew quickly with the second National FFA Convention in November of 1929 playing host to 64 delegates representing 33 states. Some landmark decisions, many of which are still seen today, were made at those early get-togethers. National blue and corn gold were adopted as FFA’s official colors in 1929 and the third convention in 1930 saw the adoption of the FFA Creed written by E.M. Tiffany. Those are just a couple of the many milestones that would come about from the annual meeting.Just as the convention has changed to include an expo, entertainment, and much more, so has its physical location. Deciding which host city is the best has become a sort of pastime to many FFA members both young and old as they reminisce on their days in blue jackets. From 1928 through 1998, the National FFA Convention and Expo was held in Kansas City, Missouri. It was then moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1999 where it would stay until moving again in 2006 to Indianapolis, Indiana. The FFA Board of Directors decided in 2008, during a convention bid process, that it should be in a rotational pattern. As a result, the convention began a three-year rotation between Louisville and Indianapolis in 2013. “The rotation will allow students the opportunity to experience the national convention in two award-winning cities,” the organization said regarding the plan. That plan has since changed and the decision was made at the 87th National Convention to move to Indianapolis through 2024, attendance numbers playing a major role in the decision. While in Indy, the National Convention and Expo will utilize downtown venues, including Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Lucas Oil Stadium, the Indiana Convention Center, the Indiana State Fairgrounds and eight event hotels. All those blue jackets are also doing more than attending leadership sessions. The event is estimated to have an economic impact of $36.2 million for Indianapolis during 2016.With many families having FFA members from multiple generations, it’s an ongoing debate between which city is the best for the annual event. Though it all boils down to personal opinion, many alumni would argue the unique nature and qualities of Kansas City make it the top town while others would say the central and encompassing nature of the Kentucky Exposition Center with Freedom Hall would make it rise above. However, many current and recently graduated FFA members favor the downtown of Indianapolis along with the many different flavors the busy city scene has to offer.Current members and alumni of the FFA may lightheartedly argue about which city is the very best for the National FFA Convention, but most all would agree that it’s the thousands of blue corduroy jackets and the young people that wear them that make the event truly rise to the top each year, no matter the location. The 2016 convention and its move back to Indy is no different.last_img read more

You’ll find them in yards, the spaces between buildings, and at the sides of busy roads. Originally constructed to bring water to neighborhoods not connected to the municipal water supply, the pumps had long been disused and mostly ignored before the “Pimp My Pump” crew came along and transformed them into colorful, astonishingly creative, and at times hilarious figures. Now, geocacher ArizonaSmith has placed a geocache at many of these pumps, effectively creating a geocaching tour of the series. Find all of the caches on this bookmark list, and you’ll also find a sidewalk Pac-Man game, a pump in jail with a police pump standing watch nearby, and Jimmi Hendrix pump.Photos:center_img SharePrint RelatedCroatia! Mahalo Pivots to Focus on Video-Based Learning

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#E-Learning#NYT#Video Services#web#YouTube 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Related Posts audrey watterscenter_img Serial entrepreneur Jason Calacanis has just announced Mahalo 4.0, the latest pivot for his company that has now moved from being a “human-powered search engine” to a Q&A site. The new Mahalo, unveiled at the Digital Life Conference today, will be focused on creating how-to video content. The goal, according to Calacanis, is to create thousands of original, high-quality videos each week. These will be supplemented with additional text as well as real-time Q&A offerings. As Dan Frommer from Business Insider describes it “Think of it as Howcast (how-to-video) + Quora (Q&A) + About.com (a more structured Wikipedia).”Learning to PivotIn his presentation at DLD today, Calacanis narrated the story of Mahalo’s multiple pivots. Founded in 2007, Mahalo did a good job with the human-powered search, argues Calacanis, but just couldn’t keep up with the adjustments that Bing and Google were making to improve their own search results. And so Mahalo continued to iterate, improving in the areas in that Calacanis said its users were already drawn to. At first, that was the “answers” component. And now it’s this “how-to” video aspect. All About the LearningBut just as “search” and “answers” are both quite crowded fields, Mahalo is entering into a space – video-based learning – where it will have several competitors. There are a number of popular and well-trafficked how-to sites, including Howcast and eHow. As Mahalo is providing more than just video – maintaining the real-time answers component, for example – it will be interesting to watch how this pivot may impact some new companies who are trying to build video-focused casual and lifelong learning sites – companies like Udemy, for example. How will user-generated how-to and educational videos fare against Mahalo’s slick production value? So will this pivot work for Mahalo? Calacanis insists the company is in a strong financial position. And he says that traffic is good, too; the company currently has about 12 million monthly uniques, and this new venture continues the company’s partnership with YouTube, which generates quite a bit of ad revenue. So studio-made and expert-filled videos may be what gives Mahalo an edge on its competitors. Or – despite the move away from the “search engine” as the focus of Mahalo – this could all just come down to one big SEO battle. It’s clear with today’s announcement that Mahalo is putting a lot of resources into developing a rich library of content. Will this drive traffic? And will learners be drawn to this site? All polling booths in West Bengal to have central forces from fifth phase

first_imgThe Election Commission of India has decided to deploy Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in all the polling booths during the remaining three phases of elections in West Bengal. In the fifth phase of polls, which is scheduled on May 6, the Commission has decided to deploy highest — 578 company — of central forces for only seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the State. The seven Lok Sabha seats going to polls are Bongaon, Barrackpore, Howrah, Uluberia, Hooghly, Arambagh and Sreerampore.Special police observer for West Bengal Vivek Dubey said that along with bringing 100 % percent polling booths under the cover of CAPF, the commission has limited the role of State police areas outside the polling booths. From putting central forces in 50 % polling booths in the first phase to 100% in the fifth phase, the deployed of CAPF in the polls in West Bengal is a story in itself. Officials involved in the holding elections in the State, said that the only state that can match such a high deployment of central forces is Jammu and Kashmir. The number of polling booths where central forces were deployed increased from 50 % in the first phase to 76 % in the second phase and 92 % in the third phase. In the fourth phases of polls which were held in south Bengal deployment was increased to 98%. In the fifth phase the cover of central forces will be increased to 100 %. Despite the high deployment of forces, stray incidents of violence have been reported in all of the first four phases. There has been no major incident of violence so far, except one in phase three where one person voter died on April 23. Another strategy which was adopted by the Commission was deploy central forces in remote areas while state police was deployed in cities and towns. Not only the political parties in the Opposition, but a section of polling personnel have also demanded that central forces should be deployed in the polling booths of the State. The leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have met officials of ECI both in Kolkata and in Delhi several times demanding central forces in all the polling booths. The Trinamool Congress leadership, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been alleging that central forces have been trying to influence voters. “They are asking people to votes for BJP,” she said in the earlier phases.last_img read more
