India ready with wherewithal to deal with the odd Virat Kohli flop show

first_imgIndia’s domination in Test cricket has been highlighted by Virat Kohli’s sensational run – double hundreds in four successive series, runs against Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, England and Bangladesh were scored without as much as breaking a sweat.Under Kohli, India have been ambitious and they have stuck to their guns by playing only five specialist batsmen. The number six slot has been manned by either R Ashwin or Wriddhiman Saha and they have done their reputation as gutsy fighters no harm. But India’s remarkable run at home was a fruit of Kohli’s mind-numbing consistency besides Ashwin’s guile with the bat. After an ordinary patch following his maiden double hundred in the West Indies, Kohli came back strongly to score another one against the Black Caps at home.By the time England came visiting, Kohli was hungry for more and he satiated it with 655 runs in five Tests. For the last two months of 2016, Kohli was in a different zone – he was virtually unbeatable and had an answer to everything England tried. He got great support from Cheteshwar Pujara but Ajinkya Rahane’s middling form and the absence of a specialist number six meant more pressure for the top five. Kohli was only too happy to lead from the front. But what would happen in case the captain had an off-day with the bat? Or worse, what if he did not fire right through an important series?India’s worst nightmare came true soon enough. After bringing England’s bowlers down on their knees, Kohli managed only 46 from three Tests and had to sit out of Dharamsala with an injured shoulder. However, that was when Lokesh Rahul and Pujara turned up stronger and more consistent than ever before, Saha pitched in with a gutsy hundred as India weathered the Aussie storm to win the series 2-1.advertisementThe Australia series was an eye-opener on several counts. For starters, India learnt not to underestimate any opposition even in favourable home conditions but more importantly, Kohli’s colleagues showed they had the spunk and the talent to not be overshadowed constantly by their superstar skipper. That is a welcome trend for a team that has now established itself firmly on the world stage. In Sri Lanka, Kohli failed twice on the opening days of the Galle and Colombo Tests but India dug deep thanks to Shikhar Dhawan, Pujara and Rahane. The men coming in at number six are increasingly proving their mettle – Hardik Pandya as India’s new-age all-rounder is an able batsman and the lower-order is dangerous when it has the license to accelerate.India will embark on some serious overseas tours by the end of the year – South Africa, Australia and England are waiting to test the world’s number one team. Rest assured, Kohli will be the prime target there and that is when his batting colleagues will have to stand up and show what they are worth once again.last_img read more

Michael Beasley Heading Back to Miami Heat

Troubled free agent Michael Beasley might return to the two-time world champion Miami Heat as sources say the franchise is considering the 6-foot-10 forward.According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Miami Heat is contemplating returning Beasley to their roster after he was waived by the Phoenix Suns following his arrest in early August for possession of marijuana.Several of the Heat’s key veteran players are supporting the signing of Beasley, who was the second overall pick by the Heat in the 2008 NBA draft.Beasley spent two seasons with the Heat, averaging 14.1 points, before team president Pat Riley traded him to the Timberwolves for draft picks and to clear salary-cap space to bring in LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Though no offers or guarantees have been made, Beasley is reported to have a strong interest in returning to the team. read more

Game of Thrones season 8 episode 6 FINAL scene A White Walker

first_imgPeter Dinklage as Tyrion LannisterHBOGame of Thrones will soon be airing its final season and fans may very well be realizing that this is indeed the end of their favourite show. So, in the spirit of goodbyes, we have the apparent description of the final scene that will wrap the final season of Game of Thrones.Be warned. Spoilers abound. The final episode winds down with a scene in the far far North, in the Lands of Always Winter. A single White Walker apparently rides to and brings the body of Bran Stark to an altar. It is known that the Night King stabbed Bran in episode 2. He was stabbed in the heart with Dragonglass. The White Walker seemingly performs a certain ritual and Bran opens his eyes, they’re apparently bright blue. The White Walker apparently puts a crown on Bran’s head and the altar slowly changes into one of ice.  Bran Stark is the Night KingFacebookThat is quite an ominous ending to the show and we have to say, leaves things a bit open-ended. Could there be a continuation of the story in a sequel series? We know that HBO is planning a prequel series but Game of Thrones has been too much of a success for HBO to just end it. Maybe we can expect a sequel to Game of Thrones in a couple of years. But for now, we’ll just have to make do with the final six episodes of the final season of Game of Thrones. The cast and crew of the show has apparently been saying their goodbyes. The final season of Game of Thrones will air in April. We can’t wait for the final season of Game of Thrones.last_img read more

Former AFROcom Developer Becomes Illumes Digital Strategy Director

first_imgWhen the AFRO ventured onto the Internet with its own website in 1994, it was the critical support of one of its employees, Seth McMillan, which played an integral role in that process. His position as an assistant to the AFRO executive team was actually his first job, but he discovered a talent and propensity for the digital world that has propelled him into an unexpected career – developing websites for large and start-up companies such as Webvisions, Lockheed Martin and Corvis. After only a year with Illume Communications, founded in 2003 by James Evans, McMillan is now their director of digital strategy. Known as the “webmaster” in the digital field, McMillan attributes his success to a few core principles: – Determination and patience, – keeping the right people close to him, – moving on the right opportunities at the right time and – being willing to take risks. McMillan spoke to the AFRO exclusively about his career current and future.AFRO: Describe Illume and its client base.McMillan: Illume Communications is a full-service, award-winning, brand and communications firm. We specialize in research-based creative strategies. Illume’s core competencies are developing compelling and effective messaging strategies. Illume starts this process by delving into the needs of our clients and digging even deeper into the mindsets of their target audiences. We finish the process by delivering thought-provoking communication devices in the language of the target audience. AFRO: Biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?McMillan: Myself AFRO: Smartest move?McMillan: My career path thus far has been rewarding, including my latest to Illume which I believe is amongst the smartest. I’m at a point in my career where the environment and current positioning lends itself to some of the most exciting opportunities ahead. This would not have been possible however, without my former partnership and experience with Marriner Marketing Communications. AFRO: Who have been your mentors?McMillan: I’ve been fortunate to enjoy the company of some wonderfully brilliant people early in my career who’ve all played a pivotal role in directly or indirectly motivating me upward. To name a few… – My mother who instilled in me, from the time I was six, that I can do whatever I set   out to do; as long as I was committed. – Jake Oliver, publisher and CEO of the AFRO– Rev. Frances Draper – former president of the AFRO– Ellis Marsalis – IT professional and consultant AFRO: What lies ahead for you?McMillan: Entrepreneurship is in my blood. I’ve enjoyed its savor and it continues to be my ultimate goal. I’m also a huge believer in giving back in some fashion so, I committed myself to helping others in such a way that their lives can too have clearer purpose and hope. AFRO: Advice to the aspiring?McMillan: Opportunity is always there waiting to be recognized and observed by you. Act upon it with vigor and purpose. Be patient with yourself as you encounter the obstacles and challenges that are inevitably designed to generate lessons in life for later reflection. At the end of the day, if I can do it, you can too!last_img read more

Massive exoplanet discovered using gravitational microlensing method

Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. Gravitational microlensing is an invaluable method of detecting new extrasolar planets circling their parent stars relatively closely. This technique is sensitive to low-mass planets orbiting beyond the so-called “snow line” around relatively faint host stars like M dwarfs or brown dwarfs. Such planets are of special interest for astronomers, as just beyond this line, the most active planet formation occurs. Hence, understanding the distribution of exoplanets in this region could offer important clues to how planets form. The microlensing event MOA-2016-BLG-227 was detected on May 5, 2016 by the Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA) group using the 1.8 m MOA-II telescope at the University of Canterbury Mt. John Observatory in New Zealand. Afterward, this event was the target of follow-up observations employing three telescopes located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii: the United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope (UKIRT) 3.8m telescope, the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and the Keck II telescope. VLT Survey Telescope (VST) at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile and the Jay Baum Rich 0.71m Telescope (C28) at the Wise Observatory in Israel were also used for these observations. This subsequent observational campaign allowed the research team led by Naoki Koshimoto of the Osaka University in Japan to detect the new planet and to determine its basic parameters.”The event and planetary signal were discovered by the MOA collaboration, but much of the planetary signal is covered by the Wise, UKIRT, CFHT and VST telescopes, which were observing the event as part of the K2 C9 program (Campaign 9 of the Kepler telescope’s prolonged mission),” the paper reads. The team found that MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb is a super-Jupiter planet with the mass of about 2.8 Jupiter masses. The parent star is most probably an M or K dwarf located in the galactic bulge. The mass of the star is estimated to be around 0.29 solar masses. MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb orbits its host at a distance of approximately 1.67 AU. Other main parameters like the radius of both objects and orbital period of the planet are yet to be determined.”Our analysis excludes the possibility that the host star is a G-dwarf, leading us to a robust conclusion that the planet MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb is a super-Jupiter mass planet orbiting an M or K-dwarf star likely located in the Galactic bulge,” the researchers concluded. The authors call for further investigation of the MOA-2016-BLG-227 event, which could deliver essential more detailed information about the newly found planetary system. They noted that this event should be revisited with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Keck adaptive optics (AO) system. Promising results could also come from future space and ground based telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), the Thirty Meter Telescope and the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). (Phys.org)—Astronomers have found a new massive alien world using the gravitational microlensing technique. The newly detected exoplanet, designated MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb, is about three times more massive than Jupiter and orbits a distant star approximately 21,000 light years away. The finding was published Apr. 6 in a paper on arXiv.org. More information: MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb: A Massive Planet Characterized by Combining Lightcurve Analysis and Keck AO Imaging, arXiv:1704.01724 [astro-ph.EP] arxiv.org/abs/1704.01724AbstractWe report the discovery of a microlensing planet —- MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb —- with a massive planet/host mass ratio of q≃9×10−3. This event was fortunately observed by several telescopes as the event location was very close to the area of the sky surveyed by Campaign 9 of the K2 Mission. Consequently, the planetary deviation is well covered and allows a full characterization of the lensing system. High angular resolution images by the Keck telescope show excess flux other than the source flux at the target position, and this excess flux could originate from the lens star. We combined the excess flux and the observed angular Einstein radius in a Bayesian analysis which considers various possible origins of the measured excess flux as priors, in addition to a standard Galactic model. Our analysis indicates that it is unlikely that a large fraction of the excess flux comes from the lens. We compare the results of the Bayesian analysis using different priors for the probability of hosting planets with respect to host mass and find the planet is likely a gas-giant around an M/K dwarf likely located in the Galactic bulge. This is the first application of a Bayesian analysis considering several different contamination scenarios for a newly discovered event. Our approach for considering different contamination scenarios is crucial for all microlensing events which have evidence for excess flux irrespective of the quality of observation conditions, such as seeing, for example.last_img read more

A blend of strings and steps

first_imgThe sixth edition of the strings and steps festival organised by noted Kathak dancer Sangeeta Majumder and Hawaiian guitar player Neel Ranjan Mukherjee got off to a flying start in the Capital. One of the highlights of the festival was the jugalbandhi between Sangeeta and Neel Ranjan; a first between a stringed instrument and dance, paving way for a wonderfully executed festival. The Strings and Steps Festival this year was a two day event that featured several musicians and some leading dancers. The genesis of the name of the festival has a story of its own. Sangeeta Majumder named this festival as ‘Strings N Steps’ after her ‘Kathak-Hawaiian Guitar amalgamation concept.’ In its 2017 edition, the country in focus was Canada and featured performances by eminent artists from the faraway land. Besides the jugalbandi, day one of the festival featured Pt Dev Bansraj on vocals and Dave Bansraj on Tabla and Sitar recital by Pt Prateek Chaudhuri, Ud Akram Khan on Tabla. The Ashta-Nayika is a collective name for eight types of nayikas or heroines as classified by Bharata in his Sanskrit treatise on performing arts – Natya Shastra. The other dance performance of the evening was Odissi dance recital by young dancer Gaurie Dwivedi who performed a piece of Devi Stuti. The item choreographed by Guru Bichitrananda Swain gave vivid description of the Goddess who as the Mother is the creator and nurtures and also slays demons Mahishasura. A lecture demonstration session on ‘Rasanubhuti’ by Prof Anupam Mahajan, successfully explained the fine nuances of Hindustani music to the audience.last_img read more
