John Oliver robocalls FCC to protest inaction on robocalls

first_img FCC This isn’t Oliver’s first time calling out the FCC. In May 2017, he aired a segment on net neutrality and asked the audience to flood the FCC with comments supporting net neutrality. Hours later, the agency’s comment system crashed. “Yes, FCC, we meet again, old friends,” said Oliver toward the end of the segment. The comedian stood on stage next to a sculpture of a giant finger about to press a huge button, saying he’d robocall the FCC commissioners every 90 minutes. “This time, unlike our past encounters, I don’t actually need to ask hordes of real people to bombard you with messages because, with the miracle of robocalling, I can now do it all by myself!”The FCC didn’t respond to a request for comment. In this study, we investigate the possibility of enhancing the curvature detection of embedded tactile sensors by proposing a ridged fingertip structure, simulating human fingerprints. In addition, a curvature detection approach based on machine learning methods is proposed to provide the embedded sensors with the ability to discriminate the surface curvature of different objects. For this purpose, a set of experiments were carried out to collect tactile signals from a 2 times 2 tactile sensor array, then the signals were processed and used for learning algorithms. To achieve the best possible performance for our machine learning approach, three different learning algorithms of Na”ive Bayes (NB), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Support Vector Machines (SVM) were implemented and compared for various parameters. Finally, the most accurate method was selected to evaluate the proposed skin structure in recognition of three different curvatures. The results showed an accuracy rate of 97.5% in surface curvature discrimination.via ArXiv Blog As with many areas of science, even the seemingly simple stuff turns out to be quite complicated on closer view. The human fingertip for example, covered with skin unlike that of any other body part, has raised ridges that allow people to feel the difference in texture between wood and metal or silk and linen. It can also detect temperature, and as it turns out, is also involved in figuring out the curvature of objects that are touched. Consider for example, the keys on a cell phone, or a television remote control. It’s these kinds of abilities that Saba Salehi, John-John Cabibihan and Shuzhi Sam Ge are trying to emulate in their lab in Singapore. To begin, they’ve started with the easiest of the bunch, trying to figure out if artificial fingerprints fitted on a robot hand can tell how roundish an object is.To find out they built a touch sensor comprised of a base plate, embedded sensors and a raised ridged surface; all on a 4mm square. They then set about testing the simple sensor in a variety ways to see if they were able to sense things with it in different ways, specifically as it was applied to flat, edged and curved objects. They also built an identical sensor except that the raised portion was flat instead of ridged, to serve as a control.They found that the raised sensor did indeed provide more feedback (resonance) information than the one with the flat surface, so much so that they were able to tell the difference in the three types of objects with 95.7% accuracy.Undoubtedly, more research will be done in this area by this group and others, and perhaps very soon, robot fingertips will become just as sensitive, if not more, than our own, leading to a whole new generation of gentler robots, able to perform tasks with both dexterity and a deft touch. © 2011 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — Over the past couple of decades, many people in and out of the science community have watched the steady progress being made in robotics. A blend of strings and steps

first_imgThe sixth edition of the strings and steps festival organised by noted Kathak dancer Sangeeta Majumder and Hawaiian guitar player Neel Ranjan Mukherjee got off to a flying start in the Capital. One of the highlights of the festival was the jugalbandhi between Sangeeta and Neel Ranjan; a first between a stringed instrument and dance, paving way for a wonderfully executed festival. The Strings and Steps Festival this year was a two day event that featured several musicians and some leading dancers. The genesis of the name of the festival has a story of its own. Sangeeta Majumder named this festival as ‘Strings N Steps’ after her ‘Kathak-Hawaiian Guitar amalgamation concept.’ In its 2017 edition, the country in focus was Canada and featured performances by eminent artists from the faraway land. Besides the jugalbandi, day one of the festival featured Pt Dev Bansraj on vocals and Dave Bansraj on Tabla and Sitar recital by Pt Prateek Chaudhuri, Ud Akram Khan on Tabla. first_imgThis Christmas eve, team DragonFly released the 54th version, DragonFly BSD 5.4.1, a free and open-source Unix-like operating system. This version comes with a new system compiler in GCC 8, improved NUMA support, a large number of network and virtual machine driver updates. This release also has significant HAMMER2 improvements and better WLAN interface handling. What’s new in DragonFly BSD 5.4.1 Big-ticket items This release comes with much better support for asymmetric NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access) configurations. Both the memory subsystem and the scheduler now understand the functionality of Threadripper 2990WX’s architecture. The team at DragonFly has been working on improving fairness for shared-vs-exclusive lock clashes, reducing cache ping-ponging due to non-contending SMP locks. This release comes with major updates to dports. Concurrency across multiple ttys and ptys have been improved. GCC 8 DragonFly 5.4.1 comes with GCC 8.0, and runs as the default compiler. It is also used for building dports. HAMMER2 This release comes with HAMMER2 which is the default root filesystem in non-clustered mode. It increases bulkfree cache to reduce the number of iterations required. It also fixed numerous bugs. This release comes with improved support on low-memory machines. This release comes with significant pre-work on the XOP API to help support future networked operations. Major changes Security Issues The machdep.spectre_supportsysctl can be now used to probe the spectre support, and machdep.spectre_mitigation sysctl to enable/disable support. The default /root perms has been changed from 755 to 700 in the build template. Delayed FP state has been removed to avoid the known side-channel attack. This release comes with clean FP state on switch to avoid known side-channel attack. There zero user registers on entry into kernel (syscall, interrupt, or exception) to avoid speculative side-channel attacks. With this release, /dev/sndstat can now be opened multiple times by the same device. MosChip PCIe serial communications are now supported. Missing descriptions for usb4bsd C610/X99 controllers have been added. This release comes with an added support for PCIe serial com and console support. Old PCI and ISA serial drivers have been removed. Userland This release comes with an added rc support for ipfw3. Vis(3) and unvis(3) have been updated. With this release, pciconf database has been updated. tcsetsid() has been added to libc. The buildworld concurrency has been improved. Networking With this release, the network tunnel driver, tun(4), has been cleaned up and updated. It’s now clonable for anyone building VPN links. The arp issue in the bridge code has now been fixed. Interface groups are now supported in the kernel and pf(4). The ENA(Elastic Network Adapter) network driver has been added to DragonFly 5.4.1. Package updates With this release, there are a number of options for running a web browser on DragonFly which includes, Chromium, Firefox, Opera, Midori, Palemoon, etc. Users are appreciating the efforts taken for this project and especially, the hammer storage is being appreciated. Though few users are complaining about the speed of the process which is very slow. The HAMMER2 used in this release is BSD licensed so it might have better potential as a Linux kernel module. Binge drinking too declined from 27 percent to 18 percent over these 10 years. Similarly harmful drinking declined from 43 percent in 2005 to 28 percent in 2015.The study concluded that young adults today were drinking less than their parents did but alcohol consumption rates failed to decline among smokers, those with mental health conditions and also among certain ethnic minorities.Dr Linda Ng Fat, who led this study said in a statement, “Increases in non-drinking among young people were found across a broad range of groups, including those living in northern or southern regions of England, among the white population, those in full-time education, in employment and across all social classes and healthier groups.The increase in young people who choose not to drink alcohol suggests that this behaviour maybe becoming more acceptable, whereas risky behaviours such as binge drinking may be becoming less normalised.”According to Dr. Fat these results are also consistent with other findings such as a decline in smoking and recreational drugs abuse along with other risky behaviors. Dec 14 2018A 2-year-old girl with an extreme form of hydrocephalus could someday lead a more normal life, thanks to a remarkable surgical intervention aided by state-of-the-art technologies used by a leading pediatric team supervised by two assistants professors of medicine at Université de Montréal.The child, who underwent two operations at CHU Sainte-Justine children’s hospital in Montreal, including a total cranial vault reconstruction, could not even sit upright because of the size and weight of her head.
