first_imgMargao, May 29 (PTI) Dempo Sports Club today sealed a comeback to the elite I-League after scoring a convincing 3-1 win over Minerva Academy FC to top the Second Division I-League at the Nehru Stadium here. Dempo, who were relegated to the second division last year, scored through Milagres Gonsalves (8th, 31st) and Felix Odili Chidi (12th) to end at the top of the points table. Only the winning team of second division I-League gets automatic promotion to the I-League first division. Minerva Academy put up an improved performance in the second half and reduced the margin through Amandeep Singh in the 85th minute. Former I-League champions Dempo collected 23 points from 10 matches while Minerva Academy FC, who needed a win to make it to the elite I-League, finished second with 18 points from 10 matches. Dempo, who just needed a draw to be promoted to the I-League, did not want to take any chances. They attacked from the start with their midfielders and strikers combining well to keep their rival defenders on their toes. Striker Milagres Gonsalves and Felix Chidi, who played with good understanding upfront with their speedy runs, put pressure on the rival defence. Dempo surged ahead in the eighth minute with Mandar Rao Dessai send a measured ceoss into the box that beat rival defence and the keeper who came out to palm the ball away but failed and Milagres Gonsalves headed the ball into the net. Minerva Academy defence again fumbled in the 12th minute when they got beaten by a Peter Carvalho long lob. Felix Chidi, who took a defender in his stride, took a shot which deflected from a defender and off the rebound he headed the ball into the net. Gonsalves then took the match away from the visitors reach when he split the defence with a one-two pass with Felix who laid a diagonal pass. Gonsalves shot beat the rival keeper all ends up to have Dempo leadiing 3-0 at half time. The visitors reduced the margin in the 85th minute when Amandeep Singhs shot from inside the box deflected defender Chika Wali and caught keeper Kattimani on the wrong foot to find the net. “I am more delighted for his team coming back in the elite I-League after getting relegated last year. We have won the tittle five time after we first got relegated in 1999-2000 and its a proud moment for us, especially at a time when our club has completed 50 years,” Dempos patron Srinivas Dempo said. first_imgLISTEN: Larry Fitzgerald- Cardinals receiver Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Your browser does not support the audio element. “All injuries are bad, but when you’re talking about a guy who’s been a fixture of your defense for many years, who’s a constant high-level performer for many years, it’s a devastating blow.”Fitzgerald said whoever takes Dockett’s place on the defensive line will have big shoes to fill.“We have to find a way to weather the storm. We’ve got to win for him. I know he’s going to be here with us in spirit,” he said. With the losses of Dockett, linebacker Daryl Washington (suspension) and linebacker Karlos Dansby (free agency), there is perhaps more pressure on the Cardinals’ offense to perform heading into the regular season. Fortunately, Fitzgerald said this year’s offense is loaded with dangerous players at running back, tight end and, of course, wide receiver. “We have a lot of weapons and a lot of guys to beat you, and that just gives defenses so much more to prepare for,” he said. “We have a lot of guys that can beat you in different facets, with the way Michael (Floyd) has continued to come forward and the speed that we have in Ted Ginn and the versatility that Jaron Brown brings and the explosiveness that John Brown brings, and Brittan Golden — we have a lot of guys that can play and play fast, and can do a lot of different things… Top Stories Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Comments   Share   Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said it was “devastating” to witness a major blow to the defense with Monday’s season-ending injury to Darnell Dockett — but he said this year’s offense is deep and talented enough to create concerns for opposing defenses.“For me, it was personally really tough to see him down, with the history that we’ve had together — all the big games and ups and downs throughout our career we’ve had together — and to see a guy that works that hard, who’s only missed two games his entire career playing at the defensive (end) position, is really astonishing,” Fitzgerald said Tuesday on the Bickley and Marotta show on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM . “Guys are versatile in terms of what they can do, and that just presents many more problems (for opposing defenses).”last_img read more
